PRELIMINARY AND INCOMPLETE PLEASE DO NOT CITE Altruism, Cooperation and Intrahousehold Allocation: Agricultural Production in Polygynous Households
نویسندگان
چکیده
Cooperative models of household decision-making are proving inadequate in an increasing number of contexts. We argue that altruism among family members can, in fact, inhibit cooperation by increasing the utility that players expect to receive in a non-cooperative equilibrium. To test this, we examine agricultural productivity in polygynous households in West Africa. We find that cooperation is greater – agricultural inputs are allocated more efficiently – among co-wives than among husbands and wives because co-wives share fewer public goods and are less altruistic towards each other. The results cannot be explained by a greater propensity for cooperation among women generally, although they may be due, in part, to the ability of the household head to act as an enforcement mechanism. What is the long term impact of political victimization on people’s attitudes toward the society in authoritarian regimes? In this paper, we identify a political mechanism through which individuals with higher socioeconomic status exhibit more distorted beliefs in societal fairness and equality. We argue that rights deprivation as a constraint on individuals’ choices, not only directly limits t...

On July 1, 2015 the SEC proposed Rule 10D-1 mandating companies to adopt a clawback provision, which requires the recoupment of erroneously awarded performance-based compensation from executives. We study the value implications of having a clawback provision by examining the stock market’s reaction to the proposal of Rule 10D-1. We find that relative to firms that had voluntarily adopted a claw...
